Described as thoughtscapes, the paintings of Ben Kennedy are explorations of the act of seeing and a search for nature’s dynamic balance. Rhythmic gestures are built up repetitively over the painting surface creating a complex patterned lattice. The resulting structure of the paintings are both Ben’s visual and procedural reflections on what nature broadly is.
The paintings could be seen to capture a meditation, an essence that is full of, if not built on, dichotomy. A still image that moves and bends and twists and dances. Flat surfaces full of depth and multiple perspectives. Creating and disintegrating forms in constant flux, like pictures in the clouds.
Colour is especially important for Ben and the relationships and distribution of colour throughout his paintings is the heart and blood and life of them.
Ben is a Waikato Media Art graduate whose work is held in collections throughout Europe and Australasia.
